Statement:
The symbolism of the circle fascinates me. I use all manifestations of its symbolic meaning in my compositions. In these works, I borrow from the ancient surgical procedure of trephinating, that is boring holes into human skulls to release evil spirits, cure headaches, and of course to alleviate insanity.
I am attracted to maps because they continue indefinitely, holding the promise of new beginnings, offering travel to unknown places, and new information to learn. I find old, outdated maps and use a soldering iron as a trephinating tool to burn voids into the maps. Surfaces layered on top of each other create locational displacements. In this way I breathe new life into the maps, giving them a chance to find new places and a new place in this world.
